This volume contains to first editions of philosophical works by eighteenth century religious dissenters. The book opens with the first volume of A System of Moral Philosophy by Henry Grove, which precedes A Vindication of the Old Testament by Samuel Chandler. Thomas Amory edited and wrote the last eight chapters of A System of Moral Philosophy, and the work was published after Grove's death in 1738. In this work, the English Nonconformist minister outlines his metaphysical and ethical system. Called the 'uncrowned patriarch of dissent' in the latter part of George II's reign, Samuel Chandler was an English Nonconformist minister and pamphleteer. Amid the Deist controversy, which questioned the intervention of God after creating the universe, Chandler published his response to Thomas Morgan's The Moral Philosopher.
