Published in the same year as the first edition, which appeared under the slightly different title 'The Army's Regulator, or the British Monitor'.

The work of John Railton, about whom little is known.

Part autobiographical in structure, Railton provides an account of the crimes and misdemeanours of the army in ten chapters, beginning with a discussion of 'the frauds practised by the officers, from the general to the corporal, to render the poor private general miserable', and concluding with an account of the 'artifices made use of to prevent the publication of this book'.

Railton also discusses 'practices after enlisting whereby the horses are deprived of their corn, the men of their money, and the king of his soldiers, by false masters', and of the author's own 'suffering, as a foot-soldier, 1736', and 'his false imprisonment and release, 1737'.
