'The Imitation of Christ' is a Christian devotional book, and is known for being the most widely read Christian devotional work, besides the Bible. It is a classic of the genre, and was immensely popular when it was published, going through 745 printings before 1650.

Originally written in Latin and published around 1418 to 1427 by Thomas a Kempis. Kempis was a canon regular of the late medieval period.

This edition is translated by George Stanhope, his translation first appearing in 1698, going through five editions by 1706, and being in publication until at least 1865. He dedicated the work to his cousin, Mrs Julia Shalcrosse of Woodhall, Hatfield. Stanhope was a clergyman of the Church of England, responsible for assisting in the building of fifty new churches in London. In1 715 he founded the Stanhope School.
