In his preface, Lansdowne explains that he was 'prevailed upon to give way to this present publication' because of the mistakes present in the numerous pirate editions of his work in circulation.

Illustrated with a frontispiece, and with engraved head and tail pieces throughout.

Alongside his political career, Lord Lansdowne was a reputed poet and playwright, stylistically similar to Dryden. He was an early supporter of Alexander Pope, serving as his first patron

With the bookplate of Richard Luckett to the front pastedown. Luckett was a lecturer in seventeenth century literature at Cambridge University, and held the post of Pepys Librarian for thirty years.

Also to the front pastedown is the illustrated bookplate of Elizabeth Handasyde.
