Burdon's charming guide begins with the instructions 'if you meet with a horse you like, and have a Desire to buy him; don't fall in Love with him before you ride him; because he may start and stumble, tho' very handsome to look upon'.

With the inscription of F W J Drake, 1834 to the verso of a front blank, and the name plate of 'A Drake Tyrwhitt Drake' to the head of the title page. The Tyrwhitt Drake's were a prominent eighteenth and nineteenth century family, with two members serving as MPs.
To the recto of the index, and to ten further leaves, are contemporary ink notations on topics including food and drink to be given to horses and treatment of maladies, including the instruction to wash a horse in honey and vinegar.
