1721 The Independent Whig
What Our Customers Say...
Description
Early Edition, Leather Binding, Scarce
The first edition in book form of the first fifty-three numbers of this periodical, first issued between 1719 and 1720. The periodical eventually ran to seventy-four volumes.
An influential work from pioneering libertarian thinkers Thomas Gordon and John Trenchard, 'The Independent Whig' attacked the corrupting influence of high church clerics, and achieved instant success.
The ODNB notes that 'readers on both sides of the Atlantic and in the salons of continental philosophes found in these publications resonant rhetoric to sound their own causes', with the periodical thought to have influenced Franklin, Livingstone, Adams and Zenger.
A later mixed edition of the work was found in Thomas Jefferson's personal library.
With the register A8, a-b8, c2, B-2F8, 2G-2H4.
Neither ESTC citation numbers for this year match this edition: N1729 has the date in Arabic, but is the correct size, where N7172 has the date in Roman, but is a large paper issue.
Neat inscription to head of front free endpaper, reading 'W. Robinson'.
A smart copy of the first edition in book form of this influential work.

Rebacked, in a full calf binding with back strip laid down and boards restored. Retaining the original endpapers. Inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned, but generally clean and bright.
