What Our Customers Say...

Description

Early Edition, Leather Binding

The second, enlarged edition, of John Dryden's English language translation of Charles Alphonse du Fresnoy's Latin poem about the art of painting, termed a critical treatise on the practice of the art, including general advice to students.

Rebound in half morocco, and illustrated with an engraved frontispiece.

This second edition is believed to have been edited by painter Charles Jervas, with the assistance of Alexander Pope, and includes a dedicatory verse poem to Jervas from Pope ('To Mr. Jervas, with Frensoy’s Art of painting'). Pope greatly admired Dryden's translation of the work, as did Dr. Samuel Johnson, who borrowed hundreds of quotations from it for his Dictionary.

Richard Graham's biographical chronology of renowned painters, ’A Short Account of the Most Eminent Painters', appears to the rear with a separate title page, as called for.

ESTC reference no. N14578. With a former owner's inscription, dated 1874, to the verso of the frontispiece.

An exceptionally lovely copy of this treatise.
