The council ended the Western Schism, a long lasting split within the Catholic Church, by despoing or accepting the resignation of papal claimants and electing Pope Martin V. The council also condemned the theologian and philosopher Jan Hus as a heretic, and ordered his execution in 1415 due to his ideas of church reform. Written by Jacques Lenfant. Lenfant was a French Protestant chaplain and author of many works on church history. His works include 'Histoire du Concile de Pise', and 'Histoire de la guerre des Hussites et du Concile de Basle'. Prior owner's signature to the title page of both volumes, Arnaud de Toroy. Engraved title pages to both volumes. With sixteen plates to the first volume, and three to the second. Collated, complete. With the signatures *4, a-f4, a-3h4 [1], 3i-5k4. A bright copy of this work.
Condition
In uniform full calf binding. Externally, generally smart. Rubbing to the joints and extremities. Small losses to the head of both spines and to the tail of spine to volume II. Volume I is lacking spine labels. Splits to joints. Small loss to the leather of front board to volume II. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Pages are very bright. Tidemarks to pages 433-455 to volume II, not affecting the text. The odd spots to pages.
