Leather Binding

'The Whole Duty of Man' has often been attributed to Richard Allestree. This remains the general consensus of modern scholars. Over time there have been at least 27 attributions including Henry Hammond who wrote the original introduction in 1658. ESTC reference no: T109232 In Latin. Contemporary inscriptions to the recto of front endpaper dated 1740. Further inscriptions to the title page, David Williams. Faded ink inscriptions to the head of the first leaf (A3) of text. With an engraved frontispiece depicting the royal arms. Pages 311-399 of this work contains 'Preces Privatae' which has a separate dated titlepage, but continuous pagination and register. A smart copy of this popular devotional work.

Condition

In a full contemporary calf binding. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing to the head and tail of spine and to the joints. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Contemporary inscriptions to the recto of front endpaper dated 1740. The ink has bled through to the frontispiece. Internally, firmly bound. Repairs to the title page and to the head of A3.
