A scarce early edition.

Volume One only of a total of two volumes.

The collected tales of Marguerite of Navarre, containing a total of thirty-two stories in the original French.

Illustrated with a frontispiece, and thirty-two engraved headpieces, by Taille-Douche.

Marguerite was Queen of France, the wife of King Henry II of Navarre. Her 'Heptameron' was inspired by Boccaccio's 'Decameron', a frame narrative of seventy-two short stories, left unfinished upon Marguerite's death.

Condition

In a full calf binding. Externally, lightly rubbed to the boards and spine. Joints are starting with a little loss of leather, primarily to the rear joint. A small amount of loss to the head and tail of the spine. Minor bumping to the extremities. Light discolouration to the spine and to the extremities. Lacking one spine label. Hinges are tender. Bookseller's label and prior owner's ink to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with the occasional spot.
