Description

First Edition, Very Scarce

First edition. With additional engraved title page in Greek, and decorative head and tail pieces. Jean Le Clerc, also Johannes Clericus (1657-1736) was a Swiss theologian and biblical scholar. He was famous for promoting exegesis, or critical interpretation of the Bible, and was a radical of his age. He parted with Calvinism over his interpretations and left Geneva for that reason. His suspected Socinianism was the cause, it is said, of his exclusion from the chair of dogmatic theology In Latin. Monastic bookplate to front pastedown.

Condition

In full vellum binding. Externally with marks to the boards and some bumping to the corners. Joints are cracked, with front board held by cords only. Internally, firmly bound. Front hinge slightly strained. Pages have some marginal tidemarks, with scattered light spotting
