Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus was a Roman historian active during the early Imperial era of the Roman Empire. His surviving works include biographies of Roman rulers, writers, historians and poets, as well as general histories of Roman life.

Edited by Johann Georg Graevius (1632-1703), a German classical scholar and critic. His editions included 'Hesiod', 'Lucian, Pseudosophista', 'Justin', 'catullus, Tibullus et Propertius'.

Bound in contemporary leather.

In the original Latin language.

With the contemporary ownership inscription, 'This book belongs to me, David Plenderleath, gifted me by my uncle Blyth.'

Illustrated with twelve plates, with the final plate loose but present, as well as a frontispiece. Collated, complete.

A lovely late seventeenth century illustrated edition of these important writings on Roman history.

Condition

In a full calf binding. Externally generally smart, with a little general wear and rubbing to the spine; a small amount of loss to the tail of the spine. Contemporary ownership inscription to the front pastedown. Rear endpaper has some loss from being torn. Internally, generally firmly bound, bar the twelfth plate, which is loose but present. Pages have the odd spot, but are generally bright and clean.
