Description

Fine Binding, Scarce

A scarce edition of this work in a pocket sized format. The entire text of this work is in blackletter. ESTC states that there are two contents leaves to the rear, this copy is lacking those and ends at page 264. Closely cut to page 25, with the catchword therefore illegible. The title page spells the author's name as Lindesay, although through time there have been many other spellings including Lindsay and Lyndsay. Sir David Lindsay was a Scottish poet and Lyon king of arms. The Lyon King of Arms was the highest heraldic office. His poetry reflects the spirit of the Renaissance, specifically as a makar. Of Lindsay's poems, he gained a great reputation for his writings. His longer poems represent the range of his literary talent. Lindsay's writings are regarded to be the first literary expression in Scotland of the Renaissance. Works to this volume include 'Of the Monarchie', 'Of the Papingo' and 'To The King's Grace'. Of The Papyngo is written in a familiar medieval manner. It is a tract full of admonition to the court and clergy. Lindsay is also famous for producing a Scottish roll of arms known as The Lindsay of the Mount Roll. This roll contains 400 Scottish coats of arms and forms the basis of the official Scots heraldic registry in use today.
