Description

Early Edition, Rebound, Scarce

ESTC citation number R22735.

A scarce early edition of this shocking tragedy by Nathaniel Lee.

Collated, complete.

'Theodosius' is set during the reign of the Roman Emperor Theodosius II during the fourth century.

This popular play was first played by the Duke's Company at the Dorset Garden Theatre in September 1680.

The play remained popular over the following centuries, being frequently staged across the years.

Lee was a notable dramatist of the seventeenth century. He first made his reputation in 1677 with the blank verse tragedy 'The Rival Queens'. He dedicated this play to Frances Stewart, the Duchess of Richmond. The Duchess was a very prominent Restoration coutrier, and is known for acting as the model for the idealised female Britannica, and for refusing to become the mistress of Charles II.
