A series of imaginary conversations between the dead, the author pairing together couples for a conversation, whether or not they were contemporaries, ancient or modern, mythological or historical.

Some of the conversations included are Diane of Poitiers and Anne Boleyn, Dido and Stratonice of Syria, Homer and Aesop, Sappho and Laura de Sade, Charles V and Erasmus, Cosimo II de' Medici and Bernice II, Plato and Margaret of Scotland, Mary Stuart and David Riccio, Seneca and Paul Scarron, Brutus and Faustina the Younger, Helen and Fulvia, and more.

The conservations vary much in conversation, the figures talking about philosophy, delicacy, oddities of fortunes, immortality of the name, the comparison of ambition and love, madness, the power of women, the concern for the future, vanity and indiscretion, freedom, and more.

By Bernard le Bovier de Fontenelle, a note figure of the Age of Enlightenment.
