What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Very Scarce
A very scarce work.
A largely complimentary account of the life and achievements of James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth. Published two years prior to the ill-fated Monmouth Rebellion of 1685, it can be conjectured that this work was published with the aim of generating support for the 'illustrious Protestant Prince'.
Illustrated with an engraved portrait frontispiece, which has been trimmed to perimeters and mounted. This portrait is engraved by F. H. van Houe.
The dedicatory epistle is signed S.T.
With the former owner's inscription 'H.C.S. Fanshawe Oct. 1920' to the verso of the front free endpaper, and further notes on the text to a rear blank.
Wing T53
A4, B-I8, K7
Lacking leaf K8, which should be an advertisement leaf.
A fascinating work setting the stage for the Monmouth Rebellion.
