The first edition of this posthumously published work from lawyer, writer, parliamentarian and Lord Keeper of the Great Seal of England Sir Bulstrode Whitelocke (sometimes Whitlocke).

A fascinating late seventeenth century account of  the political events that occurred in England during the reigns of Charles I, Oliver Cromwell, and Charles II, providing a detailed insight into the Puritan Revolution and English Civil War. 

Recorded are various speeches and events surrounding the conflict between Charles I, Oliver Cromwell, and the English government.

Collated, complete. With the collation: [1] A2, B2, B4-Y4, Z, 2A4-3I4, 3K6-3M6, 3N4-4H4, 4I, 4K4-N4, 4O2, 4P4-4T4, 4U2-5A2. With the irregular pagination called for.

With errata to recto of final leaf.

With the inscription of Matthew Raper to the head of the title page. Raper (1705-1778) was an astronomer and mathematician and published papers on diverse subjects, including ancient Greek coinage and Roman currency.

With the bookplate of Louise Cecilia Bazalgette Lucas Stratton to the front pastedown.

According to the author of Whitelocke's biography, it is 'a work which has obtained greater authority than it deserves, being largely a compilation from various sources, composed after the events and abounding in errors'. It is nevertheless a fascinating account.

Condition

In a full calf binding. Significant rubbing to board perimeters. Joints starting, with boards somewhat tenderly held by cords only. Bookplate to front pastedown. Pencil inscriptions to front free endpaper. Contemporary owner's inscription to title page head, and the author's name written towards title page tail. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age toned due to paper type, with the odd spot or handling mark. Contemporary notes in red ink to I2, N, V4, 2A4, 2Q3-4, 2R and 2S4-2T.
