The scarce first edition of this work from Christopher Irvine, providing an account of Scottish place names and waterways in Latin, and with Irvine's accompanying commentary in English. Irvine includes further information concerning the history of the Scottish Isles, and some notes on European Latinised place names
An ardent Royalist, at the time of publication Irvine was historiographer to King Charles II.
With the armorial bookplate of Thomas Maitland Dundrennan, Solicitor General to Scotland in the mid nineteenth century, to the front pastedown, and the inscription of 'Rutherford' to the verso of the rear free endpaper.

With incorrectly turned 'C' in imprint date of title page, as called for.

Condition
In a full calf binding. Boards detached, with only front board present. Significant rubbing to back strip and board perimeters. Armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Former owner's inscription to rear free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age toned, with the odd light spot.
