What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Leather Binding, Very Scarce

In the original Latin.

The first Frankfurt edition of this major work from from the French scholar and philologist Charles du Fresne. The first two volumes only of a three volume work, first published in Paris in 1678. This first Frankfurt edition was the second to be published overall.

Du Fresne's work was of major significance in attempting to develop a historical perspective on the development of the Latin language, with an effort made to distinguish the medieval Latin vocabulary from its classical counterpart. This work, and du Fresne's equivalent Greek volume, were unprecedented in their fields, and remain valuable to this day.

With the illustrated engraved title page of Melchior Haffner to volume I, printed title page to volume I, and half title to volume II.

With the collation: [10], a, A2-4, B-H4, I8, K-P4, A-4Q4, 4R3; [1] ¶A-¶4D4, ¶4E8, A-3C4, 3D6 [2]

Volume I covers the letters from A-C, and volume II from D-N. Volume III, not present here, covers the letters O-Z.

A detailed work, part glossary, part encyclopaedia, detailing the course of the Latin language.
