Description

Leather Binding, Scarce

In Latin. Mercator was a Latin Christian ecclesiastical writer. He was a strong advocate of Augustinian theology during the Pelagian controversy and wrote several anti-Pelagian treatises. He also had several translations published, being the works of several orthodox Greek theologians and heretical authors. This work is an editorial of Mercator's complete works. It is presented in two parts, bound in one volume. The first part comprises of Mercator's anti-Pelagian treatises with extensive commentary through the form of seven dissertations by Garnier. Garnier's dissertations hold great esteem and Cardinal Noris was an individual who hailed them in particular. To the second part Garnier's dissertations give an outline of the history of the Pelagian controversy, on heretical authors and of Nestorianism from 428-433. With the errata to the final leaf of both volumes. With the bookplate of Sidney Edward Bouverie Bouverie-Pusey to the front pastedown. Bouverie-Pusey was an author of a work regarding the history of Ireland and 'Permanence and Evolution - An Inquiry into the Supposed Mutability of Animal Types'. A fascinating history of ecclesiastical controversy and various standpoints during the fourth and fifth centuries. Edited with knowledgeable dissertations by Jean Garnier, a French Jesuit church historian, patristic scholar and moral theologian.
