Very scarce English translation. The Honour of Chivalry or Don Bellianis of Greece is a book of Spanish cavalries. It is regarded as a Castilian chivalric romance novel. The first and second parts were originally published in 1545. The work deals with the life of Price Don Belianis of Greece, a fictitious son of Emperor Belianus of Greece and Empress Clarinda. The work is referred to in Don Quixote of La Mancha and is cited as Don Quixote's favourite book. It is saved from the expurgation of Don Quixote's library in Chapter 6, part I. According to the ESTC there had been four translations of the work prior to this. The first was in 1598 and was not followed by another until 1650 which was book I only. The third was published in 1663 and the fourth in 1664 was an earlier Francis Kirkman translation. An extremely scarce work and translation. This particular edition is the entirety of Part I only, with the title page of 'The Second Part' and the 'To the Reader' of the second part. Collated: Incomplete and lacking pages 11-14 in addition to the 'To the reader' and correct title page of the first part. Pages 86 and 87 are misnumbered, should actually be 82/83, minpagination is as called for. This translation is by publisher, bookseller, librarian and author Francis Kirkman. Kirkman played a large role in the cataloguing of plays and was an enthusiast for popular literature.
Condition
In a full calf binding. Externally, smart with small patches of rubbing to the joints and to the head and tail of spine as well as to the joints. Internally, firmly bound. Several pages including title page have been repaired at the corners and edges. Loss to page numbers to several leaves but no loss to text. Prior owner's notations to pages 88/89. Pages are severely age toned, as expected. Light scattered spotting.
