Early Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding

Illustrated, with a frontispiece of Ogilby, full page engraved scene of Ancient Rome, and 48 plates to the Iliad and a frontispiece and 24 plates to the Odyssey. 

Collated, complete. 

ESTC reference no: R30336. 

Translated into English with extensive notes by Ogilby to the outer margins. 

The Iliad is from 1669 and The Odyssey is dated 1665. 

John Ogilby was a Scottish translator and cartographer. He is best known for publishing the first British road atlas. He translated many works including Aesop's fables. His translations were always issued in handsome editions such as this. 

The 'Iliad' and 'Odyssey' are central to the genre of ancient Greek Literature. The 'Iliad' is set during the Trojan War and The 'Odyssey' focuses on the ten year journey home of the king of Ithaca, 'Odysseus' following the fall of Troy.

A beautifully bound copy of this work, which has been rebound in a sympathetic binding with professional repairs. 




Condition

In a beautiful full calf binding. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Frontispiece, title page and full page plate, dedication leaf, and A1 have been laid down. Repair to the bottom of plate at page 18 and 132. Bottom of page 156 is trimmed as is bottom of plate to page 157 and the bottom of page 157. Closed tear to the outer margin of page 335. Loss to the outer margin to plate facing page 406. Repair to the extremities to page 475. Prior owner has copied image from plate to the bottom margin to plate facing page 13 of Homer's Odyssey. Chips to the extremities of the final leaf. Pages are very bright with just the occasional spots to pages.
