Description

Leather Binding

In two volumes, being Volumes II and III of a total of three volumes. Volume II is 'Persia Part II'.

In the original Italian.

Register for Volume II runs as [1], A-Mm8, Nn5; register for Volume III runs as *4, A-Ii8, Kk7.

Collated, complete.

An important early travel work, tracing Valle's exploration across Persia and India. Valle explored Constantinople, Asia Minor, Egypt, Palestine, Baghdad, Cyprus, Malta, and Sicily before returning to his hometown of Rome.

These two volumes concern Persia, India, and Valle's return trip.

Valle's works are well respected for bringing insightful information about the world into Italy during the Renaissance period. His works were also translated into English during the same century they were published.

Bookplate of Charles Finch, 4th Earl of Winchilsea, Viscount Maidstone, to the front pastedowns. A Member of Parliament, Finch served as the Ambassador Extraordinary to Honver, Vice-Admiral of Kent, and First Lord of Trade during his career.

Condition

In a full speckled calf binding. Externally, generally smart. Joints are a little cracked. Light rubbing to the boards and spines, with a small amount of loss to the head and tail of the spine sand to the extremities. Spine labels of Volume III are worn. Bookplate to the front pastedowns. Tear to the rear endpaper of Volume II. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with some odd spotting. Title page of Volume II is bound a little wonkily. Small chip to leaf G5 of Volume II, affecting two words only. Closed tear to leaf X7 of Volume III, no loss. Leaf Aa8 of Volume III with a closed tear to the head, no loss.
