Leather Binding, Very Scarce

In the original Latin. A very scarce work. This work is a duodecimo, with the signatures running as [-a1], a2-a6, b-c6, d8, A-Z6, Aa-Zz6, Aaa-Ccc6, Ddd4, Eee-Ggg6, Hhh7. With an engraved title page, showing Jesus at the cross, with angels before him, and numerous in-text engravings. Collated, bound without leaf a1, otherwise complete. A Jesuit work on the sufferings of Jesus. The work is in the same school of teaching of Thomas a Kempis' 'Imitation of Christ', following the same ideology and preachings. The work discusses in detail the sufferings of Jesus Christ as detailed in the Bible. The Jesuits are a religious order of the Catholic Church, headquartered in Rome, founded in 1540. With a comprehensive and thorough index to the rear. Little is known about Adrien van Lyere, the author of this work, besides that he was in the Society of Jesus. This is his only known work. With an introduction written by Antonius van Torre, who joined the Jesuit order in 1632, spending most of his life at the SInt-Jozefscollege in Aalst. He wrote a 'Dialogi Familiares' handbook, to help easily learn Latin, a widely acclaimed work. Label to the front pastedown, in French. Two bookplates to the front pastedown, 'Ex Libris Seminario Legatis ab Adm. Rdo. Dno. Richardo Irvine Neave Eccles. Cathedralis Canonico ob. die viij Junii MCMXXV', and 'Ex Bibliotheca Seminarii S. Joannis'.

Condition

In a full calf binding. Externally, the front board is detached but present. Leather to the spine is lifting. Small crack to the head of the rear joint. Loss to the head of the spine. Rubbing and light marks to the boards and spine. A couple of small cracks of leather to the boards. Rear hinge is starting but firm. Two bookplates and a label to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with the odd spot. Tidemark to the bottom edge of the first few leaves. Small chip to page 229, with no loss.
