Simon van Groenewegen van der Made studied law in Leideb and gained notoriety as a commentator of Grotius and for this work, which remains the leading work on Roman law in the Netherlands.

Grotius was a Jurist in the Dutch Republic and laid the foundation of international law based on natural law, writing the still influential Mare Liberum.

The work is split into six parts covering areas digested into Holland, codes of order, fief customs and much more.

Condition

In a vellum binding. Externally, sound with some marks and tidemarks to boards. Bumping to corners and head and tail of spine. Ink inscription to backstrip. Library plate to front pastedown. Internally, binding tender in places with small closed tears to first few pages and slight cockling. Pages bright and clean with occasional handling marks.
