A scarce new pocket-size edition, written in Latin. First published in 1583. In the original full vellum binding. Thomas Smith's notable work on English politics, under Queen Elizabeth, describing it as a mixed government and a commonwealth. Smith wrote this whilst serving as England's ambassador to France during the sixteenth century and it remains an influential source of insight into the Elizabethan era. Including a catalogue of provinces, cities and municipalities in England. Thomas Smith was an English scholar, diplomat, Secretary of State and prominent member of the court of Queen Elizabeth I. 'De Republica Anglorum' remains his most renowned work, however he also published the popular title of, 'De recta & emendata lingvæ Anglicæ scriptione, dialogus'. With a bookplate to the front paste-down and the ink signature of one, 'Willielmi Hamper', dated 1807, to the front free endpaper. The reference is as follows: *6, A-Cc8

Condition

In the original full vellum binding. Externally, smart with shelf wear to the extremities. Small crack to the lower front joint. Marks to the boards and spine. Loss to the vellum of the front board. Hinges starting but still firm. Handling marks to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Loss to the paper of the upper front paste-down. Bookplate and ink mark to the front paste-down. Previous owner's ink inscription to the front free endpaper. Small ink mark to the rear free endpaper, and red ink marks to the rear paste-down. Internally, binding strained to the title page, but otherwise firmly bound. Pages age-toned but generally bright and clean with some handling marks throughout.
