Early Edition, Leather Binding, Scarce

A scarce early edition. Augmented and revised. In a full embossed calf binding. A fascinating work detailing the histories and features of numerous countries around the world. With an extensive section on the British Isles, focusing predominantly on Medieval history. Other countries mentioned include France, Mesopotamia, Syria, America and more. This work was later extended into the 'Cosmologie' series which included the first description in print of Australia. Peter Heylyn was a seventeenth-century ecclesiastic, author and vocal controversialist against the Puritans. His work predominantly relates to history, politics and geography, with many of his personal ideologies come through in his work. Lacking the folding table as usual. With numerous ink annotations from the previous owner throughout. Including an ink signature to both paste-downs for one, 'Samuel Brown', dated 1826. With a bookplate for the 'Old Book Repository' to the front paste-down.

Condition

In full calf binding. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities and marks to the boards. Small crack to the lower joint and crack of about two inches to the centre of the spine. Hinges strained but still firm. Age-toning and marks to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Ink signature and bookplate to the front paste-down. lnk inscription, creasing and loss to the front free endpaper. Ink signature to the rear paste-down. Creasing and small puncture marks to the rear free endpaper. Internally, lacking the folding table, but otherwise firmly bound. Pages age-toned throughout. Loss to the upper title page. Previous owner's signature dated 1758 to the title page. Numerous ink annotations and marks throughout. Handling marks throughout. Text is still very clear and readable.
