A very scarce work. In Latin. This work is a duodecimo, with the signatures runnin as +4, ++6, A-Z6, Aa-Ll6, *4, **6, A-Z6, Aa-Vv6, Xx4, *4, A-I6, K5. Three volumes in one, being two volumes of 'Manuale Praelatorum Regularium', and one volume of 'De Sacris Monialibus Tractus F.'. An analysis of the Gospel of John in the Bible, discussing various aspects of the gospel. The author looks into what one can learn from the gospel, and how to life and worship according to the writings, in relation to the Catholic religion. The discourses in the gospel are supposedly concerned with the issues of the church-synagogue debate which was underway during the time of the writing. This sees the beginning of the movement of separating Judaism and Christianity. Written by Luis de Miranda, a monk of the Order of St. Francis. Two bookplates to the front pastedown, 'Ex Bibliotheca Seminarii S. Ioannis', and 'Ex Libris Seminario Legatis ab Adm. Rdo. Dno. Richardo Irvine Neave Eccles. Cathedralis Canico ob. die. viij Junii MCMXXV'. Two stamps to the title page, 'Bibliothecae Portiuncula', and to leaves +4, ++1, A1, . Prior owner's ink inscription to the tail of the title page. A very scarce Latin work on the Gospel of John.

Condition

In a full vellum binding. Externally, generally smart. Lifting of vellum to the joints. Some discolouration and marking to the boards and spine, as is usual with vellum. Prior owner's ink inscription to the spine. Two labels to the tail of the spine. Light loss to the head and tail of the spine. Minor bumping to the extremities. Small cracks to the spines, and a crack to the front joint. Two bookplates to the front pastedown. Small loss to the rear endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age-toned and generally clean. Small tidemark to leaf B1, and smaller tidemarks to the following pages. The occasional annotation to the margin and underlining of text.
