The Variation Of Animals And Plants, In Two Volumes.

By Charles Darwin

1878 - London - John Murray

9" x 6"; viii, viii, 411, 486

A first edition of Charles Darwins follow-up to On The Origin Of Species, in two volumes, which contains extensive study of plants under domestication.

In chapter XXVII Darwin gives a description of what he called pangenesis, which is a theory of heredity. Darwin himself believed that this was the most critical part of the book, and pursued comment from his friends and colleagues. Few of them were as enthusiastic about the theory as he was, but he was generally pleased with the the popular reviews that the work received.

The book was large and dense by the authors own admission, and sold only 5,000 copies in his lifetime. It was later recognised, however, for its importance in attempting to describe heredity by a common principle.

Rebacked expertly in half calf with gilt detailing to the spines. Externally very smart, with some rubbing and marks to the boards, and light general shelfware. The spines have been rebound, and are unblemished. Internally bright and clean throughout, and firmly bound. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED
