His techniques relies on satirical poems, with a joke in the last line. The epigrams were manifested by Martial's curiosity and power of observation, providing a source of life and humour in Ancient Rome. In the epigrams, Martial satrises Ancient Rome city life, and the scandals of his friends and acquaintances. Martini also romanticised his provincial upbringing, contrasting against the vast Roman city life. Martial wrote a total of one-thousand five-hundred and sixty-one epigrams. The 'Epigrams' were originally published in Rome between AD 8 and 103. This was during the reigns of the Emperors Domitian, Nerva, and Trajan. Martial was a Roman poet, and is best known for this work. He is also considered to be the creator of the modern epigram. Edited by Vincentius Collesso.
