In Latin. With an index. ESTC citation number T94264. Collated, lacking page 317/318 leaf X7, and lacking endpapers.. Otherwise complete. The signatures for this work run as A8, b2, B-X6, X8, Y-Z8, Aa-Oo8, Pp4, a-f8, g4, h2. A collection of Martial's famous epigrams. Martial is considered to be the master of the Latin epigram. His techniques relies on satirical poems, with a joke in the last line. The epigrams were manifested by Martial's curiosity and power of observation, providing a source of life and humour in Ancient Rome. In the epigrams, Martial satrises Ancient Rome city life, and the scandals of his friends and acquaintances. Martini also romanticised his provincial upbringing, contrasting against the vast Roman city life. Martial wrote a total of one-thousand five-hundred and sixty-one epigrams. The 'Epigrams' were originally published in Rome between AD 8 and 103. This was during the reigns of the Emperors Domitian, Nerva, and Trajan. Martial was a Roman poet, and is best known for this work. He is also considered to be the creator of the modern epigram. Edited by Vincentius Collesso. Condition

Rebacked in a quarter cloth binding with the original panelled calf to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Rubbing to the boards. Bumping to the extremities resulting in loss of leather. Loss to the head and tail of the spine. Title written to the spine by a prior owner. Light marks and discolouration to the cloth. Hinges are starting but firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to the pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with some spots. Tidemark to the tail of the textblock. Lacking page 317/318. Closed tear to page a7, no loss.
