Asmodeus; Or, The Devil on Two Sticks

By Alain Rene Le Sage

1841 - London - Joseph Thomas

10" by 6", xx, 401pp

The first English edition of Le Sage's comic novel about the demon Asmodeus.

First English Edition.

Featuring an illustrated frontispiece.

'Translated by Joseph Thomas and illustrated by Tony Johannot'.

Asmodeus or Asmodai is a king of demons mostly known from the deuterocanonical Book of Tobit, in which he is the primary antagonist. He was supposed by some Renaissance Christians to be the King of the Nine Hells. Asmodeus is the demon of lust and is therefore responsible for twisting people's sexual desires. It is said that people who fall to Asmodeus' ways will be sentenced to an eternity in the second level of hell.

In a half morocco binding with marbled boards. Externally, generally smart, some rubbing to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Some light foxing to the endpapers but otherwise generally clean with just a few scattered spots. Tidemarks to the frontispiece. Overall: GOOD.
